Sweet Lindsay's Wedding (+ a change in location)

Oooooh it's an exciting day! My darling friend Ms. Lindsay had her wedding featured on the Style Me Pretty blog. I knew this day was coming and was hoping to be a bit more prepared with my Etsy presence but things don't always work out that way. But the exciting part of that statement is that I'm starting an Etsy page! Yay! I thought I'd try to streamline things a bit more though, which means you need to pack up your cup of coffee, wrap that sweater around your shoulders and make the trek to my new blog: Hello My Dear (which is also the name of my Etsy storefront). Luckily it's an easy move. I've decided to stop updating this blog as of today so you can find me exclusively here. Meet: Marcus Nilsson

My friends— please excuse the short post as I am trying to do eight things at once and all in the course of about a half hour. I’m heading to the beach for a night and am late for the door. But I couldn’t leave without sharing these amazing images from food stylist Marcus Nilsson. You know I love a beautifully styled photo, especially when it’s of a maple-sugar walnut pie. These images conjure up the sweet and savory smells of Thanksgiving so I thought they were perfect to end the pre-hustle and bustle and help get you all excited for the holidays fast approaching.

Pretty Papier Mache (and Just Plain Papier)

I find it hard to believe that I went through elementary and middle school art classes, as well as 4 years in pursuit of an art degree and never created anything using papier mache. This technique does seem right up my ally: inexpensive, whimsical and seemingly simplistic. However, it does seem to take a long time and I'm not the most patient of creators. I'd like to give it a try one of these days, but I'm in full realization that they won't look anything like the art of Anna-Wili Highfield or Elizabeth Jardine.
First, Ms. Highfield. She's a young woman from Sydney, Australia who grew up with a puppeteer father. Can you imagine how cool and creepy and fun that must have been? She was destined to create these amazing birds. Apparently she creates the form with cotton paper, then hand paints each piece to get the desired effect, then sews it all together. The end result is absolutely stunning in it's movement and form.

Next, Elizabeth Jardine. Her sculptures are more traditional papier mache and are more funky and rough than Anna's. They remind me of something out of The Fantastic Mr. Fox or another cheeky stop-motion animated piece. I love that fox—I want to put a pretty patterned bow tie around his neck and give him a prominent place next to my Roald Dahl books.

And mostly because I haven't mentioned Anthropologie in awhile and I wouldn't want either of us to forget it's loveliness (as if we could!), here are some incredibly charming birds they had for sale. I don't see any trace of them on the Anthro website any longer, but they can still be admired. And if you're feeling particularly crafty, check out this tutorial inspired by these birds. Let me know how it goes! I'll do the same.

Capote's Black and White Ball

Truman Capote was a strange man: eccentric, selfish, talented and obsessed with high society. In 1966 he decided to throw an amazing and (ahem) bitchy party for a little over 500 guests—those he deemed the most important at the time. Apparently he had enough clout to be taken seriously with this shenanigans and people went bananas trying to get invited. Among those he did invite were Frank Sinatra, Candace Bergen, Mia Farrow, Andy Warhol, Sammy Davis Jr and Harper Lee. The following are pictures of the night (set in NYC at the Plaza on Park Avenue). The ladies were instructed to wear black or white dresses with white masks and gentlemen in black tie with black masks. Amazing.

One of my favorite things I read was that while so many of the guests purchased couture masks that cost a fortune, Capote's black mask was purchased from FAO Schwarz for 39 cents.)

Charming Cameos

When I was in 3rd grade, my teachers assistant drew our silhouettes. She shone a light on our profiles and traced the shadow. And I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Cameos have obviously been popular as artwork and jewelry forever but recently they've become a staple in modern interiors. You've surely seen some great examples but here are a handful more (concluding with the lovely idea of layering your cameos for a romantic and stylish statement piece).

Living with Beci Orpin

Beci Orpin is a Melbourne, Australia based illustrator/artist/designer/inspiration. I became familiar with her work after exploring the Australia-based design blog, The Design Files and must admit that I became obsessed with her house before her work. Although they really are one in the same.—the inclusion of a design studio and the fact that she decorates with a lot of her own work result in a space that could actually double as a gallery. All of it is so fun and happy. Let's start with her house:

I love that she not only uses her own art to decorate her walls, but she uses her children's. They go together really well!
Speaking of her work, here is some of my favorite stuff of hers:

I especially love the wooden, die-cut brooches. I'd wear the heck out of that fox brooch.

Curiouser

Maybe you're one of the lucky few with a little extra pocket change this weekend? Maybe there aren't any good flea markets or a little-bit-nutty boutiques near you? Well, you my friend, are about to spend that money at two of my favorite online shops.
The Curiosity Shop is a fun spot to find anything from an artist-created necklace to a great book or stationery. Here are some of my favorites (including the hilarious stamps "of disapproval". Clever.).

Another favorite online shop is Three Potato Four. This one specializes in vintage industrial pieces like specimen bottles, old signage, school house furniture and cash register price flags. Some incredibly beautiful things to find here (if you appreciate a little bit of rust on your incredibly beautiful things that is).

I love the "worry worry" cup! I love that it makes me do anything but—I wonder if that was the idea?

Woodland Interiors

It's amazing what a little outside-inside will do for a room. The addition of some faux antlers or a container of sticks adds a sense of whimsy and energy to a space. The problem I normally have with a more "rustic" interior is how dark it usually is—I've tried to keep the inspiration images on the lighter side, but wood has the tendency to be rich and dark. Everything in moderation dear ones. And read through to the end for an awesome tutorial on making a patterned dear head for your wall. It really is so fun!

Diane von Furstenberg

I'm sure I don't need to tell you about the classic beauty that is Diane von Furstenberg. If you've ever worn a wrap dress you have this lovely lady to thank for it. Ok, that's probably a bit of a stretch but she is very well-known for this fashion staple. She became a designer in the 1970's, left the fashion scene in the 80's (for Paris) to become a publisher then returned to NYC in the 1990's where she relaunched the brand to wide acclaim.
Her portfolio is timeless. Any one of the dresses could be worn at any time during her 40 years of designing and will probably be worn for decades to come. And they're not ridiculously expensive. Expensive, yes, but not totally unobtainable. She's a lovely woman with a heart for other women entrepreneurs and is definitely an inspiration. Here are some pictures from her recent collection.

So beautiful. I love the flowy, belted, printed top with the leggings. Gorgeous. And timeless right?
Here are some older pictures of her, pictures of her home in Connecticut and of her Manhattan office. You can get a sense of her as a designer by looking at what she surrounds herself with and chooses to wear.

She's recently announced that she'll be designing housewares, to launch in the Spring of next year. I'm looking forward to seeing what she comes up with - it's bound to be amazing. Especially after creating rooms for the London hotel "Clarigde's". She did a wonderful job layering textures and patterns and colors. I can only hope that her housewares will have the same personality.

Paris vs. New York

Vahram Muratyan (ooooh! so French!) is a Parisian graphic designer in NYC. Not too long ago he decided to create comparison prints between Paris and New York and the results are charming and witty and (at least in an iconic manner) honest. He's not selling them yet, but they've been very well received so I imagine it's only a matter of time. Visit his blog and site.

Ok, I got a little carried away with this one—I just love them all so much! There are even more (and he's adding often) so go visit the blog.
I'm obsessed with the idea of NYC. How could you not be really? So much history and glamour and personality in a tiny, tiny space. Taschen has published a new book "New York—Portrait of a City" that has some stunning photographs. As long as we're already in a New York State of mind, I thought I'd share some of those pictures as well.

The Finders Keepers Market

This past Friday I helped set up the Finders Keepers Market here in Brisbane. This means that I spent five hours fluffing tissue paper flowers, tying said flowers in clusters with fishing line and hanging (or at least watching as they were hung) said clusters from the ceiling of the Old Museum. The result was very rewarding and I consider the afternoon well spent indeed.
The Finders Keepers Market is a delightful display of 65 crafters peddling their creative wares. I saw everything from clothing to letterpress to jewelry and if I had a scrap of extra money I would've for sure spent it. My sister-in-law bought a fun ring and an amazing cloud necklace and I was excited that at least one of us was being supportive! Here are some pictures from the event:

The Old Museum and grounds made an unbelievable venue. Inside and along the side veranda were beautiful craft stalls, outside was a live music stage, food and coffee area. The talent was overwhelming. Speaking of: Brisbane-based illustrator Natalie did the gorgeous poster for the event. She has some stunning work on her site and her Flickr provided me with some of the photos from my collage. Visit her and say thank you. Of course it wouldn't have been possible without the dear Alischa of Bespoke Press (don't worry, more about her later) who was one of the ladies in charge of the event. It was a great weekend!

Pop-Up-Palooza

The idea of the pop-up shop is not a new one, but for some reason it's been a reoccurring theme in my online travels lately. In case you aren't really sure what they are I'll explain in very elementary terms: for a multitude of reasons established retailers decide to put up a (generally) small shop that will be up for one day to one year. Often they do this to test the market or introduce a new product or just to rejuvenate a brand. Whatever the reason they're usually quite interesting and fun little shops. I've put together a handful of images to show you. Pay attention to the materials used (almost entirely cardboard at Leelamae) or the space itself (a metal storage unit for the Puma shop). Very cool.

Meet Ashley Meaders

Ashley seems to be one of those girls you instantly want to befriend. She's adorable and quirky and spends her days making amazing events. Sydney Picnic Company

Don't you wish you could just make picnics all day? And people would pay you for them? Well, I do. And so did the cutest couple around: Simon and Natalie. They've started a picnic-for-hire company in Sydney (Australia) and for a smallish fee you can enjoy gourmet food (they try to be as local and organic as possible) packed sweetly in a wicker basket with cutlery, dishes and lovely little extras like handcrafted menus and banners. You can also get blankets and cushions. Geez. Maybe they franchise.

Pet Cuteness

I don't have pets. Well, I live with my brother and sister-in-law's two sweet black cats (Hobart and Sofia) but since I'm allergic I don't really get to enjoy them. And they were here before me so it's hard to take ownership of them. That said, I've been thinking that I'd like to have a little dog of my own. Not now, but someday in the near future. A little pug or boxer or terrier of some kind maybe. They're so stinkin cute. And so are these classy coats from Rover.

Ridiculous. My heart nearly exploded from the cuteness.
And once I became one of those crazy pet owners who puts my dog in a wool pea coat and makes him a birthday cake, I'd probably have to have a miniature version of him made up as well as a fun portrait painted. Oh dear.

Meet Amy Chin

I love a perfectly curated room just as much as the next person but what I love most about Amy's prop styling is her ability to create spaces that look lived in. Her creations are approachable and comfortable and attainable while still being exciting and inspirational. Not an easy thing to do I can imagine, but she certainly makes it look so. Her palettes are stunning and the items she showcases are quite lovely. Of course when you have clients like Real Simple, West End and Anthropologie (to name a few) how could you not produce beautiful photographs? Certainly the brands give a strong base, but it's her knack for setting the picture that is truly admirable.

Spooky Prints

It's almost time for Halloween and although it's barely celebrated here in Australia, I couldn't resist a little post (or two) to get in the spooky spirit. Today's focus is on some goose-bump worthy art.
I've never actually seen the show Dexter, but I appreciate it's artistic approach and understand that a lot of people really love it. Including Ty Mattson, a California based designer (who's done lots of good things, check out his site). He created these prints, one for each season. They're fun to look at without any background but if you're a fan of Dexter I bet you'd be crazy for them!

Now onto a fabulous mother-daughter Etsy seller, tag team tompkins. They do lovely victorian-inspired calligraphy and papercut prints. Some of which are quite spooky. In that Edward Gorey sort of way.

Nina Invorm combines two of my favorite things—sweet, vintage dishes with lovely hand-drawn elements. Her addition of birds or bunting or hearts to the already delightful ceramics result in a charming piece of art I'd love to showcase. Luckily you can purchase her art at her Etsy shop.

Little Ladies

I love paper dolls—always have and probably always will. I love the easy outfit changes and those funny tabs and the fact that they were cheap enough that I could afford an entire wardrobe! I also have always been a fan of the Colorform playset. Those were generally more focused on environments than clothing options but the fun to be had was glorious. When I ran across these wall decals from Mae I was in love. They're paper dolls that are actually vinyl decals for your wall! They are adorable and would be so fun in a little girls room or a not-quite-so-little girls room. I was thinking they'd be so great in my office! Can't think of a creative solution to a problem? No worry! Just dress up these cuties until you've figured it out. Or until it's quittin time...

These childhood memories got me thinking about little girl's spaces and I just knew the ol' internet would have some lovely rooms to inspire or admire. I was certainly not disappointed!

So great right? And there are plenty of ideas in these rooms to inspire adults. I would go crazy for that Funny Girl poster or that cluster of paper flowers/lanterns. Oh the dreaming and pretending you could do in rooms like these!

Product Redesign

You know I'm a sucker for good package design (I'll buy anything if the bottle's pretty enough) so thedieline.com is one of my favorite places to spend an afternoon. People are just so darn clever and talented. Anyway, the site has a feature called "before and after" that I really enjoy. It's all about repackaging and occasionally entirely re-branding an existing design. Some are, well, not so great. But others make me want to rush out and put them in my Target shopping cart. A Little Bit of Autumn

The Flatish World of Ann Toebbe

These paintings remind me of the drawings of interiors I used to have to create in Art School. We'd take the flat floor plan and draw each piece (furniture, doors, walls) up at an angle. I'm probably not explaining that properly (and mine never even came close to being this awesome). But they did bring back memories of plastic triangles and graphite pencils. Luckily for you I'm not sharing my work with you, I'm sharing Ann Toebbe's.

Ann is a Chicago-based artist that now teaches in the city (as well as creates these interesting residential gems). I love that it's not idealized—so many of us have that dining room table covered in food and junk mail! Check out more of her work on her site or stop by 20 x 200 to purchase some. (Aside: 20 x 200 is a really, really great place to start or add to your art collection! The art is moderately priced, not mass-produced and helps support emerging artists.)

Mismatchy-Matchy

I love a well put-together mismatch. Whether it's just a hodge-podge of pillows or three different couches, if it works, it works. I think the success of it is dependent on having an underlying similarity: luxurious fabrics; same time period/genre; color cohesiveness. Ultimately I'm of the school that says if you like it and you're confident in it, it's hard to argue against.

The White House

Did you know that the White House has set up a Flickr photo gallery chronicling Obama's time in office? Well they have. And it's really, really great. Not only do we get to see the President working but we get to see some sweet family time and some interaction with fellow Americans. There are over 2500 photographs and I'm not going to pretend that I made it all the way through, but I've pulled some of my favorites.

You really need to flip through this photostream. Not only are the pictures great, but the one or two lines under each providing context for the photograph are really interesting.
Looking through the pictures made me adore the man even more than before. But it also made me adore Michelle's wardrobe. I knew she was fabulous, but I'd not been paying enough attention. Oh Amelie!

There's a sweet french movie called "Amelie" that you + I really love (or at least I do and you will). It's subtitled but a delight to watch and listen to and the soundtrack is gorgeous. As is the cinematography (how could it be anything but with Paris as it's backdrop?). Design*Sponge does a fun feature called "living in..." where they take screen captures of different films and then feature different housewares and fashion items that represent the film. They recently did one for "Amelie" you should definitely have a look.
Obviously the movie has inspired quite a few talented artists and in the June 2010 issue of Nonpareil magazine, a handful of creatives got together to create a party based on the movie. It turned out really nicely.

I've been waiting for the perfect post to incorporate these lovely designs from Emerson and I think they have that certain je ne sais quoi that goes quite well with this French party. They're really fantastic and Emerson herself (the blonde is her) is really quite funny. Go visit her.

Delicious Delights

What's more lovely than cakes and bakery counters and gumballs? Paintings of such goodies of course. Wayne Thiebauld painted some really beautiful desserts in the 60s. He reminds me of Edward Hopper in his technique and in the overall feel. The paintings, although quite charming, have a sense of loneliness and want in them. But they are delightful aren't they?

If you thought those were sweet (pun intended obviously), you're going to love these dessert drawings from Mr. Andy Warhol. I've loved them for awhile and am glad to finally share them with you!

I love his quote on that glorious yellow cake "Food is my great Extravagance". Somehow I doubt that to be true, but it shows you how much he really loved the things he drew.

Pretty Little Four Eyes

I'm not a super fan of American Idol but I remember seeing Ms. Brooke White a few seasons ago and I thought she was adorable. And when I ran across her project with Ms. Summer Bellessa called "The Girls with Glasses Show" I was reminded just how stinkin' cute she is. These two lovely ladies have put together a little talk show of sorts where they interview musicians or artists and make the occasional silly video. See for yourself here.
My favorite thing about the show is their fashion. Summer is also the editor of a magazine called "Eliza" so she obviously has a great sense of style. I love the retro feel of their wardrobe—they often where actual vintage pieces which is so fun to see.

Cute right? Head down to your local Salvos and get some pink dresses for yourself. I plan to!

Rustic Party Decor

Even though technically I'm in Spring and not Fall, my head is still back in Illinois with the changing of the leaves and the hot apple cider. My parents had a bonfire a couple of weekends ago and although I'm sure it was lovely, I'm also sure it didn't look anything like this. But if you were Martha Stewart (or someone paid to make it look like you were Martha) you may create something like this to drink your spiced drinks and listen to blue-grass.

Doesn't it just make you feel so autumnal? Nothing like it. And actually there are some really cheap and easy ideas above. So call some friends, put on a pot of chili and make some bunting. I'll be with you in spirit!

Expressionless

Not to be confused with emotionless... these pieces of art are far from that! There's a fine line between intriguing and creepy when you decide to paint a faceless person. These artists have embraced that line.

For some reason, painted children tend to be a little creepy to me so I'm for sure a little more creeped than intrigued by artist Lisa Golightly's children. But her contrast and delicateness win me over. She does some great line drawings too, check out her Etsy store and her website. Lisa also does amazing family portraits (with or without faces!) so be sure to check her out if that's something you'd like to get done.

Aren't they gorgeous?! These inked men are from a series called "Brawlers" by Fredrik Tjernstrom. I wouldn't say they're creepy, but I would say I wouldn't like to confront one in a dark alley. Or in a well-lit alley for that matter. But aren't they wonderful? So fashionable and masculine.

Oh man. I want all of these paintings. Clare Elsaesser is another talented artist selling her wares on Etsy (lucky for us!). Her acrylics are so feminine and breezy and simple, yet so full of emotion. Check out her shop.

Herringbone

Fall always makes me yearn for preppy patterns like chevron and plaid and herringbone—they must remind me of tweed jackets and a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving or something. Well herringbone is one of my absolute favorites—it's great in fashion and amazing in interiors. Look at these floors!

Stunning right? Now check out these beautiful, white subway tiles and the amazing reclaimed barnwood laid out in a herringbone pattern.

Super fun right? Maybe you live in an apartment and can't rip up (and replace) your floors and walls or maybe you just don't have the time/money/desire to do so but still want to bring some herringbone in (if only for the fall). Grab cushions like these or an ottoman or refinish a chair.

The Stylings of Ms. Emily Henderson

You may recognize this sweet gal from HGTV's Design Star? Well, maybe you don't watch that show, but you're going to love her. She's styled for magazines and blogs and (recently) a wedding. Oh and she also has her own show called "Secrets from a Stylist". Before I left the country I was able to watch the premier episode with a dear friend and I really enjoyed it. Check your local listings folks!

She does a really good job with adding just enough character to make it interesting without overpowering anything. And she's ridiculously adorable (that's her—the blondey in the floral dress above) and really clever and funny. I didn't realize it until just now, but I may have myself a little design crush. I'm not surprised...

Love is a Big Deal

If I got married tomorrow (ok, with the way I fall in love, let's say today just to be safe), I'd want it to be this. Nick and Surya got married on a mountain top. They had an awesome sign at their altar (that will be simply stunning in their house). They were married by the most beautiful man ever (that's him in the sunglasses below). The groom cried (my favorite). The guests were comfortable and taken care of (flip-flops and blankets were available). The flowers were gorgeous and unpretentious. The brides sister sang an enchanting song for their first dance. The bride sang Ingrid Michaelson's "You and I" during the ceremony. The bride and her ladies got ready in an Airstream trailer. Goodness me. Does it get more lovely?

So good.
Of course, a wedding (at least to those uninvited) is only as good as it's pictures and these photographers did an amazing job : Jonas Peterson (you can hear the brides sister singing the song she wrote for the couple on his site) and Poser Images. I also got pictures off of the couples wedding site (of course, amazing) and Once Wed.

Kitchen Nook

When I was 12 if you'd asked me about my dream house it'd have to have these three things: a wrap-around porch, window seats for reading and a breakfast nook. Don't let me mislead you into thinking those things wouldn't be on my dream house list now as well, but the one requirement that I think I'd get the most use out of would definitely be the kitchen nook. Beer Packaging

This past week I've had the pleasure of noticing a lot of beer bottle labels. My brother had a friend in from Colorado and the two of them enjoyed some of the finest beers Australia has to offer. I'm not much a beer drinker myself, but I definitely notice and appreciate good packaging. It seems there's a lot of interest in wine label design but I rarely hear anything about the good beer packaging. I thought you might also be unaware of this part of the design world so I thought I'd share some of the fun ones I've found.

Since I'm heading out of (Illinois) summer and into (Australian) summer I have a feeling I'll be seeing a lot more beer labels in the future. Cheers!

Candy-Coated Interiors

There's a fine line between looking sloppy and looking fashionable when you walk out into the world in your boyfriends shirt. These stylish women do it well. Ok, so I'm a little late. I think all schools have already been back at school for a few weeks but I thought it'd be fun to show some school-inspired decor ideas. If you happen to be lucky enough to stumble across an old card catalog or metal lockers, antique desk or vintage maps- here are a few ideas on how to incorporate them into your decor. (As if you'd need the help you clever decorator you!)

I love the idea of using an antique desk for a bedside table (did you notice that? In the red bedroom?) and those great school chairs in the kitchen. It's all very cool and modern and yet comfortable. Happy hunting!

Sweet sweets

I have always loved a beautiful table. One of the first things I really remember admiring in a Martha Stewart Weddings issue was this gorgeous photo shoot that centered around an amazing strawberry cake table. I couldn't find the image to share with you, but I found plenty of other inspiring dessert tables. This is such a great idea for a wedding or a shower or an afternoon tea with the ladies.

Aren't they so fun? I love the vanity with the tiny fruit desserts and the wedding cake with the paper banner and macaroons. I think it's such a good idea to do a dessert table for your wedding instead of just the one cake. Then people can enjoy their favorite dessert - not everyone loves cake you know!

Rooftop Gardens

If I ever live in the city I know that I'll miss all of the green space that I'm accustomed to. Even though I've never been much of a gardener, I fully appreciate everyone around me that is and enjoy their yards immensely. Even my over grown bushes and often too-long grass brings me a lot of joy. I do, however, really appreciate a secret rooftop garden. There is something so magical about being surrounded by huge iron buildings while sitting among flowers and other plants—especially 10 stories up!

Meet: Deanna Staffo

Deanna is a Philadelphia based illustrator whose work reminds me of the lovely Kat Macleod with bits of Shel Silverstein thrown in for good measure. Her work is retro and modern, charming and disturbing and I want to hang every piece she's created on my wall. The more you stare at it the more it stares at you and the more emotional it becomes. She is definitely another illustrator that inspires me to get out my sketchbook and give it a go.

Have you seen these blogs (curated by people far more fashionable than I) dedicated solely to what they wore that day? Part of me hates it for being so self-centered and the other part of me loves it for being so inspirational and brave. That said, our new friend Deanna created a series of "what I wore today" that I would love to subscribe to.

She was somewhat recently married (to another illustrator of course) and she illustrated images for the invitation. The hot air balloon was the save the date (my favorite piece).

The top left drawing was done by her husband and was the RSVP card, Deanna drew the top right and it was the invitation. Do you see that in the RSVP he's drawing her and in the invite she's drawing him? Cute huh? I thought you'd enjoy that.

The finale. I am obsessed with the couple in the boat (a portrait she drew for a friend's wedding). If you frequent the local Starbucks at the Plaza like I do, you'd definitely agree with me that this handsome fella looks just like one of the baristas: glasses and all. And the Sofia Coppola portrait is spectacular. I love the horses in the background, particularly the masked horse.

What I wouldn't give for a beach house. The sand and the salty air and the breezes—nothing more lovely. I'd have a hard time knowing which direction to decorate in though. Would I want it to be more fun and bright and vibrant or more neutral and calming? Luckily I can imagine both ways and not actually have to invest in anything.

Sunday Suppers

Sunday Suppers is this amazing, lovely event that happens once or twice a month at a beautiful downtown loft in Brooklyn, New York. Fourteen to twenty strangers get together to learn from a local chef how to cook a meal using market fresh, organic ingredients. After the cooking, the group sits down to enjoy the meal together. What a great way to make new friends!

Oh boy did I have a hard time stopping with the graphics on this one! Sunday Suppers was started by photographer and stylist Karen Mordechai so of course all of the images on the site are beyond enchanting. The event encompasses my favorites: beautiful food, styling, decor, paper goods, aprons. And would you just look at how sweet Joanna Goddard (of a cup of jo) looks with her pregnant belly wrapped in a lovely apron. Gorgeous. The Glory of Anthropologie

My city has a pathetic excuse for a shopping mall. It's mostly kiosks of eyebrow shaping and sunglasses and "designer" purses. So when I decided I wanted to try and find some end-of-the-summer deals, I asked a sweet friend of mine to take the trip to a much better mall about an hour away. Because she's a sweet friend (and her husband is out of town), she agreed. My favorite thing? Always Anthropologie. I don't usually buy much (if anything) but I love to wander around the store admiring the displays and smelling the toiletries and touching the luxurious fabrics. We walked out of the store agreeing that it was a little depressing to not have the money to purchase the beautiful items, but ultimately there was so much inspiration at Anthropologie that it was totally worth it. It's like a gallery more than a store.
Anthropologie has a Flickr stream with some of their display designs and I thought you'd enjoy them with me? Good.

Don't you love the eraser maple leaf from their Ontario store? Such a good idea. Check out others in the photostream. Abandoned Houses

He was intrigued and also a little confused by so many large, (at-one-time) stately homes that had just been left to rot and collapse. So, he began documenting them. Neryl Walker has a fun, retro style of illustrating that I'm (of course) super attracted to. I remember seeing her package design for Bloom and Bare Escentuals and being really drawn in by the flirty and fun art.

I can't get over the Sophia Loren olive oil bottles. And I really have to agree that manners are the "ultimate fashion accessory".
Good ol' Design*Sponge featured Ms. Neryl's Melbourne house and it's just as inspired as I would've imagined. Such glorious retro detailing and fun collections.

Don't you just adore that man in the sailor hat and life jacket? That's why I love these things—you give people a choice of props after serving them liquor and a huge dose of true love for a few hours and you get some amazing portraits. And it's a fun way to get pictures of all of the people that mean the most to you. Love it.

Meet: Jessica Hische

Prepare to be amazed. Even if you've already seen her work, I imagine that seeing it again will inspire and intimidate and awe you (as it did me while I was putting this post together). Jessica designs type. Oh, and illustrates and does graphic design and is awesome at all of it. She's just out of school (BFA in 2006) and has had the opportunity to work with great clients, creating beautiful work. I'm going to shut up so you can get to the ooh-ing and ahh-ing.

Ugh. She's so good. And apparently quite cool. Look at this tattoo of hers.

Lovely. I'm trying not to get jealous. Although according to Ms. Jessica, "envy can be a big motivator." I'd have to agree. She's motivated my socks off.

Ruffles

Ruffles are so sweet and feminine and in the right environment can be modern at the same time. Keep it simple, surround them with clean lines and try to keep the floral ruffles to a minimum and you'll create a delicate and flirty space that will make everyone comfortable.

Spectacles

I've been in need of a new pair of glasses for about 8 years now. I know, it's a long time. I'm a contacts-wearer and haven't really wanted to spend the money. But now I have vision insurance so it seems a waste to not use it! That said, I went to the eye doctor yesterday (ps. I HATE that little puff of air! They've got to be able to figure out how to test what they're testing for without doing that. Someone get on it). I was sitting in the doctors chair performing all of these tests (trying to answer correctly) and then he pulled out this little booklet and I got super distracted. How did I never notice how lovely the color-blindness test circles are? I almost forgot to tell him the number I saw because I was thinking about how I could get some of these framed in my house. Do you think he'd sell me that little book?

I found a really cute pair of glasses that I think I'll actually enjoy wearing (unlike the glasses of my youth. Sigh.). And I'm so excited to find a case to put them in.

I really like the one with the screen printed spectacles. And I think the little clutch in the shape of glasses is really clever, don't you? I'd never seen anything like that before! Pop over to Etsy to see even more great options.

A Collection a Day

String Gardens

Now I'm no gardener. I have a plant (Larry) that I've managed to keep alive for a year and a half (he's a trooper) and I'm now officially growing pumpkins (because I let one rot from last Halloween), but when it comes to growing things I'm clueless. Not to say that I don't wish I had a well planted yard or a bountiful garden or a sun porch full of lush green plants, just that I'm lost when it comes to such things. So I'm certainly not pretending that I'll be figuring out these little beauties any time soon, but you definately should. Because they're amazing.

These are the work of Fedor using string, moss, grass and bowls as the base and then suspending the plants. They're so fun and whimsical—just what we need. If you figure it out, you let me know.

Camilla's Morran

You may remember awhile ago I introduced you to Camilla of Studio Violet? Well, she's a lovely Swedish artist and she has a funny little dog named Morran. She's recently been on vacation in Spain and France (like you do) and her little pup was lucky enough to accompany. She's taken some really fun pictures of her enjoying the travels and I thought they'd be fun to share on this drizzly Tuesday (is it drizzly where you are?).

Little Drifters

This story starts with a man named Lenny who builds these little wondrous boats out of random pieces of nature he finds (leaves, sticks, flowers... you remember nature right?). Anyway, from what I can gather he's been doing this for years and has a lovely gallery on Flickr to inspire you and I to do the same.

Amazing and gorgeous right? Can you imagine sitting by water already feeling happy because you're sitting by water, but THEN floating towards you comes one of these little beauties? Ecstasy. The picture just a little bit above on the left with the little boy stooping reminds me of Where the Wild Things Are. They're that kind of magical—don't you think?
The story then continues with a man named Jeff who has a rather amazing blog called Booooooom. You're probably much cooler than me and have heard of this fun art community (since apparently there are over 2.5 million page views a month - dang). But I came across it through my love for you is a stampede of horses (another amazing art blog). Anyway, back to the story of Jeff. He was inspired by Lenny to coordinate a world wide event asking people to build their own little drifters and send in photographs that he would share on the blog. He's in Vancouver and thought it'd be fun to invite the area to a picnic and day at the water where people could admire each others lovely creations and meet new friends and enjoy the summer. What a good idea! Here are some of my favorites that were submitted to the site.

Meet: Mary Kate McDevitt

Good morning friends! Today I'd like to introduce you to a very talented woman name Mary Kate McDevitt. She lives in Portland (where else?) and is quite the busy little bee. She's an illustrator/designer/reseller of vintage awesomeness. Her mini "to do list" chalkboards and clocks have been featured on lots of blogs and she's featured in the August/September issue of Ready Made magazine. Here are some of my favorites of her work:

Don't those little chalkboards seem much less daunting than a random post-it? I might actually get some things completed!

As an artist/designer trying to find my voice, I really appreciate that her commercial work looks so much like her personal art.

Over the Bed

For some reason I've always had a bit of a tough time with the space over the bed. You have your headboard and then what? It's an awkward space, usually between doors or nightstands with other walls in need of something as well. I don't know why it's a mystery but I don't think I've had anything on the wall above my bed for the past 6 years. This ends now people! This American Life

I adore the radio program "This American Life" (you too?!). I love Ira Glass, I love the music they choose, I love the stories. I love it all. I'm not super familiar with the television show (mostly because I don't get Showtime), but what I've seen of it I love. Of course a show as beautiful as this would produce beautiful merchandise and tour posters and product design, so I thought today we'd enjoy a handful. Bar Carts

Mad Men was not a disappointment last night—as slow and subtle as usual. It's so easy to romanticize the era, even with all of the debauchery and political/social/relational nastiness. I still love to watch it. But it always makes me want a Brandy Old Fashioned. If I had a stocked bar, I'd definitely deplete it on Sunday nights. Which is part of the problem. The other part of the problem is how expensive it is to keep a home bar. All that said, if I entertained more or had more money or it simply was more important to me, I'd love to have one of these delightful bar carts stocked with beautiful liquor bottles and funky, retro glasses and all the bar tools they make. It's such a fun little piece of furniture.

The trays and tables are great, but I love the idea of a rolling cart full of liquor. No matter what room you're in, you can just keep pulling it behind you. And it's easier to bring outside with you for those late summer evenings.

Retro Styling

Mad Men is back on Sunday and I'm so ready for that distraction! In honor of the shows return I thought I'd share these photos from artist Alex Prager. I don't know much about her except that she's awesome—her fashion styling and set design and perspective is all so intriguing to me. Every image tells a story (and it's usually a little disturbing). These images of hers remind me of Alfred Hitchcock and the Valley of the Dolls and Mad Men...

And these stills from Beyonce's video "Why Don't You Love Me" fit so perfectly with Alex's aesthetic. (warning: the video is a little steamy).

This is my favorite era for fashion and makeup and hair—it's all so theatrical and put together. I could never pull it off (nor would I want to do all that work every day just to feather dust my Grammy's) but boy do I love to look at it! Can't wait until Sunday!

Recipe Storage

Illustrated Recipes

Today we combine two of my favorites: fun illustrations and recipes. I don't actually do a lot of cooking, but I love cookbooks and recipes and beautiful photographs or illustrations of all that goes into creating in the kitchen. This is why I got so excited when I found the British blog recipe look. The creator of this resource invites anyone who has a recipe to share to illustrate said recipe and it'll get posted to the site. Fun huh? And you haven't even seen the products yet!

I've had this beautiful blackberry pie recipe for quite some time. It originally came from design*sponge. Aren't the colors glorious? I had it as my desktop background for awhile, but I got hungry every time I looked at my computer (which is ALL the TIME) so I had to change it. But it's gorgeous and worth sharing.

And then I found this charming "Chai Tea" recipe from a funny little lady named Lucy (I found this via greenwala though). Read it, it's clever.

Speaking of clever and things you must read, look at these funny little "recipes" from Laura George. Recipes for enjoying a banana and relieving stress. (If you can't read it let me know and I'll translate. So. Stinkin. Cute.)

Jim Tierney

Sigh. This is one lucky lady. Not only does she live in one of the most beautiful, charming and romantic cities in the States (Savannah, Georgia) but she spends her days doing prop styling and event design. It's kind of my dream world. Look how talented she is:

She works with publications such as Country Living, Better Homes and Gardens and Southern Living. (all images on this page are from Liz's Flickr, except the first image from Design*Sponge)

LOVE this circusy wedding! The striped curtains in the barn, the kissing booth, the pom-poms, those HUGE, glorious balloons! All of it is so fun and somehow manages to not be over-the-top obnoxious. She's truly talented.

I love that she re-purposes so many items that others may just put in the trash can: broken fruit crates, rusty flower arranging inserts (used cleverly as a pen holder), musty suitcases, random (but oh-so-lovely) drawers. Her detailing is so fun and clever and inspirational. The only problem I have with looking through her portfolio and noticing all of the interesting items is that it gives me one more excuse to collect and hoard random items. And believe me, I don't need another excuse! But you see how it all comes together? Let's go garage sale-ing!

Alice by Annie

My cousin is throwing her sweet Grace an Alice in Wonderland themed birthday party (and her son [whose birthday is right after Christmas] an Unbirthday Party) tomorrow. I've seen a lot of Alice themed everything, especially since the movie came out a little while ago. But I'd never seen these fashion shots by the one and only Annie Leibovitz for Vogue, so I thought there might be a good chance you'd never seen them as well.

The Kid's Got Talent

I found Simon Filip via designismine. She shared the amazing tent image with the profiles and I just had to find out more about him. I'm so, so glad I did (and so are you). This little guy (ok, he's not THAT little, but he was born in 1991 which seems absurd to me) is extremely talented and has already gotten some press for his fashion photography. Which he says he's been doing since September. When people are so incredibly talented and it seems to come so easy it both inspires me and irritates me to no end. Oh to be young and talented. Let's just enjoy him shall we?

The composition... the lighting... the fashion... the Zooey look-a-like (his sister!)... the styling... geez. Looking forward to watching this talented young man grow.

Ok, so it's not exactly the sea, but isn't this picture lovely? I wish I was standing on the banks of something with swans and paper boats wearing a newspaper hat. I've never felt comfortable in socks and shoes with a dress, but I'd be willing to try again.

(Oh my friends! Today was a big day and I hope you'll forgive my late post! I'll try to be better but the truth is that things are a little hectic for me right now and I can't make any promises. Stick with me though! Things'll be back to normal in no time [fingers crossed]. On to the day!)
I would love to be able to draw. I can doodle 'til the cows come home, but when I sit down to actually draw out a character or animal or funny seagull smoking a pipe, it just doesn't seem to want to come with the ease that I'd like. Chocolate Bar Packaging

I'm a sucker for good packaging and for anything sweet (you too?) so these chocolate bar wrappers are right up my alley.

I was very disappointed in my planning this morning: that I didn't have any chocolate in my house when I sat down to put this post together. Hopefully you won't be in that same situation (although I must say the exceptionally sweet and delicious watermelon I settled on was delightful). There's a fun little blog called "summer goals" that's inspired me to make a collage of my own with sweet summer suggestions: laying in the grass, being pushed on a swing, wading in the lake, cotton candy... you get the idea. Dan Martensen

I'm intrigued by the spaces that artists live in, which is why the Selby is a fun site for me to visit. It's also a great place for me to discover artists that I was previously unaware of, like Dan Martensen. He is a great photographer who's done work for Free People, H&M and Bloomingdales (to name a few). I found his photographs to be full of life and grit—sometimes a little too heroine chic for my taste, but always interesting and thoughtful.

Now on to the country home that he shares with his model girlfriend (of course). The property is full of gardens and open space as well as a barn studio (for his photography work and her painting), a guest-house barn and a large main house. The good life indeed.

Isn't it gorgeous? I love the drawers of silverware! Visit the Selby for more of this house (and countless others) and Dan's site for more from his portfolio.

Paul Rand

When I stumble across amazing designers like Paul Rand it makes me really sad that I didn't study graphic design in school. Scrolling through his portfolio and reading bits about his life makes me wish I would've known about him years ago. But we'll learn about him together. You can read about him and see more of his work here.

I love it all, but the one that intrigues me the most is the balloon "inflation" advertisement. It's stunning in it's simplicity. Mr. Rand worked until his death in 1996 and although you can see that the technology changed the overall crispness of his work, his personal vision and detailing was constant. (The last two images in this set were done in 1990 and 1996.)
His site provides an excellent account of his life and work and provides many lovely photographs of him and his family. You get a real sense of who he was by simply perusing these images.

Octopi

My cousin and sister-in-law both randomly wore lovely octopus t-shirts on Friday of last week and I thought to myself, "herein lies a blog post". The octopus is one of those amazing creatures that is at the same time both cuddly and cute. The illustrations of them are whimsical and exotic and add an unexpected touch of glamor to your living room or wardrobe.

Summer Styling

It's been awhile since we've looked at the portfolio of a prop stylist so when I ran across the work of Christine Rudolph I thought it worth sharing. Especially since she has so many lovely, summery photographs. I love that her aesthetic is a little chaotic with pictures hung slightly crooked and fabrics draped haphazardly—it's so cozy and friendly. I found her indoors-outside, beach styling to be particularly inspirational and interesting.

Splash of Color

When I moved into my grandfathers house I was lucky enough to have a harvest gold fridge and matching stove. Unfortunately the fridge had to be replaced but the stove still adds it's 1970's character to my kitchen. A colored major appliance isn't for the faint of heart—a bright orange fridge says a lot about your personality and the personality of your home. It's definitely a commitment but if you love a bright yellow range, you'll probably always love a bright yellow range.

Chic Horses

Today is my mother's birthday and in honor of her I thought I'd focus on one of her favorite things: horses. She's been obsessed with horses since the first time she saw them I think. Luckily, she's never been a theme decorator—because there is some atrocious horse decor out there. Believe me, I've looked at it. They are so majestic and beautiful I don't know where the translation is lost when it comes to creating housewares inspired by horses. Although I suppose any sort of toilet paper holder is going to be a little cheesy - even if it is inspired by a gorgeous animal. These rooms are far from cheesy.

Retro Beachwear

I went to college in Savannah, Georgia but unfortunately spent most of my summers back in Illinois with hardly any access to sand and surf. Oh sure there were occasional trips to the man-made lake and its pebbly beach or to the local water park but nothing compares to the ocean: the wind and salt and sand in your swimsuit/car/beach bag. I grew up watching Gidget and Moon Doggy surf and Frankie and Annette flirt and I dreamed of living in the 1960s. I ran across some great photos of fabulously glamorous starlets on the beach (or maybe that's the desert...) and thought you'd enjoy them.

Elizabeth Taylor is so cool with her lasso and ruffly bikini top and don't even get me started on how gorgeous that shot is of Marilyn. Then there's the lovely Susan Hayward with her tropical print and the fabulous Natalie Wood.
In the spirit of things, let's you and I channel retro glamour and hit the pool in something like this:

Nearly White Rooms

I'm a big fan of color and have never even considered having white walls. But I'm easily persuaded and these rooms just may have convinced me to try it out in my next space. I do love colorful accents anyway and with a white backdrop you have such freedom — it's so easy to change the look of a room by simply adding a different pillow or a colorful lamp.

These bedrooms are my favorite. I purchased a white down comforter a year and a half ago and can't bring myself to put a duvet cover on it. It's like a sweet little cloud in my tiny bedroom. Yes it gets dirty fast, but who cares! It makes me happy every morning when I make my bed and that's definitely worth the cost of washing a little more often. Hidden Posters

You're like me—and we both love mid-century design. Particularly graphic/poster design. Oh, and we both love when things are discovered in their natural habitat. It's like they've been just waiting for us to be appreciated again. Which is why I know you'll love this as much as I did. Renovations at Notting Hill Gate Tube Station have recently uncovered these posters in a now non-public area of the station. This is where the elevators (lifts as it were) used to be, but when escalators were put in, this area was simply closed off. But with renovation comes exploration and they were found again. And aren't we thrilled? Check it out.

There are a handful more images on the London Underground Flickr page, but I've shared most of what they've got up. Since I am a notorious player-of-favorites, I have decided on one poster in particular to focus on. That little "travel Royal Blue" sailor on the end is so cute I can barely handle it. His little red nose and pipe and fantastic striped blue hat are so perfect. Certainly makes me want to get on that funny little blue bus. Thanks to Grain Edit I found out that the illustrator of that poster is a Ms. Daphne Padden. And she has created some other exceptional travel posters.

I love this child-like, jovial illustration style. And because I can't help myself, I've established a favorite: isn't the yellow-bearded sailor in the bottom right poster the cutest with that little cat? Boy oh boy. I would love to have that (or any of the others for that matter) hanging in my little house. Let me know if you discover one somewhere won't you? Tea Towels

I love linens. I love screen printing. And I love anything cheeky. So these tea towels were pretty much made for me. Granted, some are cheekier than others, but they are all super fun and would make my dish drying much more enjoyable. (The first two towels are my favorite I think. They are from artist Donna Wilson and read "use my beehive to dry your dishes" and "use my beard to dry your dishes". So stinkin cute!)

And yes, that is a Mr. T tea towel. Hilarious! With the exception of the first two towels, the alphabet from illustrator Linzie Hunter and that lovely bike at the end, all of these are available at To Dry For. There are oodles more to look at as well. Such a fun shower or wedding gift don't you think?

Pretty, Pretty Pantries

The kitchen is the heart of the home. It's where everyone gathers to chat and drink coffee and eat delicious food (homemade or not). No matter where I've lived or who I happened to share the house with, the kitchen was always the choice location. My first apartment after college didn't even have a table in the kitchen, yet my roommate and I still spent countless hours sitting on the cupboards or leaning on the kitchen windowsill laughing and spending time together. One thing that kitchen did have (that may have been my favorite thing in that space) was an exposed pantry. It was nothing fancy, just a few shelves and a cabinet but I found it to be so charming. I've always been intrigued by pantries and beautiful and interesting kitchen storage. I love anything that displays everyday, useful things—especially well-designed food packaging or beautiful dishes. They add such life to the room. And it's revolving art that naturally changes with the seasons.

Because my little house is so humid, any dry good that I open needs to immediately be put into tupperware or something similar. If I had lovely exposed cabinets or shelving, I may be tempted to put everything in gorgeous glass jars like some of the inspiration shots above. So many lovely ideas!

Wallpaper

Wallpaper has come a long way. Not only is it much, much easier to put up and take down but it's now available in any pattern you can imagine. I particularly love bold wallpaper in small spaces like hallways or bathrooms—it's so unexpected and fun.

Carnivale

Once upon a time there was a dark little show called Carnivale. It explored human nature and all that that implies: good and evil, love and hate, hard times, good times... It only lasted for two seasons (and I'm just now finishing up watching the second season) but it's made an impact on me. Not just the story but also the cinematography. You know I love a historically accurate television series (see the Mad Men post below) and the designers of Carnivale did an excellent job of transporting me to this era.

This era is not a particular favorite of mine in regards to interior design (too many hard sofas and wood panelled walls) or fashion (all of those drop waists and shift dresses - no thank you). BUT one thing that I've loved seeing is all of the lounge wear. Such beautiful florals and silks and girliness.

One of the ladies of the Carnivale has a robe very similar to that one on the far left and I'm in love with it. Unfortunately, all four of these pieces have been sold, but this site has a lot of other great items (including some amazing vintage dresses).

Chalkboard Paint

My cousin and I were out last weekend and saw a fun chalkboard menu and she said "you should do a blog post about those!". And here we are... Like any good decorating idea, some people do a better job with it than others. Here are some of my favorites.

I love that this design element can easily translate into an eclectic bathroom (isn't that fun? "you look marvelous" instead of a mirror!) or an industrial office space or a delicate kitchen. You could design something more permanent like that gorgeous wall behind the bed or use it as a list keeper. What would you do with a can of chalkboard paint?

Carl Kleiner

I am intrigued by the styling of Swedish photographer Carl Kleiner's photographs. They are often ethereal always imaginative and definitely creative. His fashion shoots are particularly fascinating: the doll house with the strong lighting and the cloud tethered to the floor are a couple of my favorites.

Aren't the macaroons fun? They're already so whimsical but to suspend them in a cage reminiscent of an electric beater is so brilliant.
Last, I love these sportier shots— especially all of those beautiful shoes!
